Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has recently launched a three-day training program titled “Empowering Educators,” which aims to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into learning processes. This joint initiative between AIOU’s Directorate of Academic Planning and Course Production and the Commonwealth Educational Media Center for Asia (CEMCA) seeks to equip faculty with the necessary skills to utilize AI in their teaching methods.
During the first session, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Ur Rehman, the dean of the faculty of Education at AIOU, emphasized that AI is not just a technology of this era, but the technology that will revolutionize educational practices. The program focuses on the various opportunities offered by AI in shaping academia, with the goal of providing instructors with the experience and knowledge to enhance the learning experience.
Shadrach Basheerhamad, the director of CEMCA, and the chief guest of the event, highlighted the dual nature of AI. He acknowledged its potential to improve education significantly, while also acknowledging the associated challenges. Basheerhamad stressed the importance of understanding AI’s potential and utilizing it effectively.
The course covers different aspects of AI in education, including automated grading, personalized learning, and the creation of educational materials that can adapt to students’ specific needs. By incorporating these technologies into their teaching strategies, educators can better cater to the individual requirements of their students.
The program has two main objectives: first, to provide faculty with a basic understanding of AI technology, and second, to foster creativity and innovation in technology-supported classroom activities and teaching strategies. The collaboration with CEMCA will ensure that the training program aligns with the needs and trends of modern education in the digital era.
AI is now an essential tool in education, and its appropriate utilization can be a significant achievement for online educational platforms. The program aims not only to address current teaching demands but also to enhance teachers’ skills in the continuous use of the latest technologies.
Through hands-on workshops, participants will have the opportunity to apply AI applications in creating their curriculum and evaluating students. Practical sessions will demonstrate the concepts and techniques taught, providing applicable knowledge for everyday educational settings. This will contribute to the establishment of an innovative and continuous learning culture.
The training program concludes with a discussion on the future trends of AI and education, focusing not only on solving present-day issues but also anticipating future advancements. As AI becomes increasingly prevalent in various fields, the education sector faces the challenge of adapting to these changes, with AIOU taking the lead in training its staff to stay at the forefront.
The university plans to expand these workshops annually, demonstrating its commitment to ongoing professional development and the implementation of educational technologies. This proactive approach will help educators create a more effective learning environment for students, enhancing their overall educational experience.
