The TechnoWomen Artificial Intelligence (AI) Forum kicked off on April 17 in Astana with organizers hosting a major discussion on the global opportunities and challenges presented by AI technologies. The event, which had both physical and virtual components, brought together key players from international organizations, national governments, and commercial entities to debate the implementation and regulation of AI. These meetings mark a significant leap forward and a crucial stage in the digital transformation process for Central Asia.
Global insights on AI development
The forum began by examining why and how AI is a transformative force in economics and society worldwide. Yelena Sedyh, Chairwoman of the TechnoWomen Strategic Council, highlighted the difference that the event’s participants, including members of international organizations and cybersecurity experts, can make in driving AI development on a global scale. The discussions emphasized that AI has evolved from being a mere tool in the mid-1950s to becoming an established presence in various aspects of business and governance. Sedyh stressed the challenges of integrating AI into decision-making processes and replacing them with automated systems in a timely manner. She also emphasized the importance of ethical considerations in the responsible use of AI, with governments playing a key role in shaping regulations.
Regulatory challenges and opportunities
The forum aimed to bridge the gap in understanding AI usage and also examined the regulatory frameworks driving AI development. Natalia Myagchenkova, an expert from Yandex specializing in regulatory risks, highlighted global efforts in this area, particularly the provisions being made by countries like Canada and the European Union. She noted that Canada’s creation of the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA) is revolutionary in shaping regulations that prioritize safety and public interests. The European Union has also developed specialized laws that focus specifically on AI, creating an effective governance mechanism. Myagchenkova pointed out that China has implemented comprehensive measures that require developers to adhere to certain norms consistent with national values and priorities.
AI’s role in achieving sustainable development goals
One of the key topics discussed was the potential for AI to contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Kseniia Fontaine from ITU provided insights on how innovative AI technologies can address issues such as climate change, educational inequity, and health development for both men and women. However, she also highlighted the risks associated with AI, including job displacement, data biases, and security threats that need to be managed effectively.
Crafting a unified strategy for AI advancement
The TechnoWomen Forum in Astana laid the groundwork for continuous dialogue and exchange between Central Asian states regarding the future of AI development. Looking ahead, the event aimed to bring together stakeholders to develop a unified strategy that addresses the challenges of sustainable and gender-balanced technological advancement. These types of events are crucial in shaping a tech-driven future that meets global standards and domestic needs.
