In a bid to embrace the technological revolution, parents in New York City are proposing the establishment of a cutting-edge high school focused on artificial intelligence (AI).
The resolution, put forward by five Council parents, advocates for a specialized school that places a strong emphasis on AI in subjects such as languages. The parents argue that this would give students a competitive edge and position them as leaders in the rapidly growing tech sector. Furthermore, they believe that New York City’s status as a hub for innovation and investment makes it the ideal location for nurturing AI talent.
The parents stress that delaying the creation of an AI-themed public high school in the city would be a missed opportunity. They argue that such a school would equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the field of AI, enabling them to keep pace with other cities and countries in terms of development, research, and innovation.
The resolution will be put to a public vote at a meeting scheduled for next Tuesday. With the demand for AI workers soaring, the industry’s growth rate is outstripping the supply of trained professionals, making it imperative to act swiftly. By next year, the industry is projected to be worth a staggering $190 billion.
The proposed learning program outlined in the resolution includes computer science courses, AI, machine learning, and robotics concentrations. It also calls for partnerships with leading universities and innovative companies, as well as access to state-of-the-art hardware and laboratories. Benjamin Morden, a member of the Council for Curriculum & Instruction at the proposed school, emphasized the ubiquity of AI and stressed the importance of incorporating AI education into high school curricula from the outset.
