Elon Musk joked that Janet Yellen may have fallen victim to a cryptocurrency giveaway scam, as reports indicate that her computer was accessed during a data breach at the Treasury Department.
In the past month, the U.S. Treasury revealed that in December 2024, the country faced a cyberattack allegedly carried out by Chinese operatives, highlighting rising cybersecurity concerns in the United States. Recent reports have indicated that this data breach also impacted the systems of high-ranking officials, including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, further exacerbating the severity of the situation.
However, despite the seriousness of the situation, the world’s richest person, Elon Musk, did not miss the opportunity to use cryptocurrency as a means of poking fun, as it is one of his favorite pastimes.
“Send me 1 BTC, and I’ll send you 2 BTC”
In response to the reports, Tesla CEO Elon Musk humorously suggested that amid the alleged China-backed Treasury hack, bad actors accessed Secretary Janet Yellen’s computer, implying that the economist might have been duped.
“Maybe she clicked on the email saying, ‘Send me 1 BTC, and I’ll send you 2 BTC,’” the billionaire wrote in an X post on Friday, January 17, eliciting laughter from his fanbase.
