Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing was officially announced on X on Saturday, and the attackers did not waste any time. They used the account to announce the launch of a fake meme coin, claiming it to be the “national cryptocurrency of the Republic of Myanmar.”
Within minutes, numerous fake meme tokens emerged, all claiming to be the official Myanmar meme coin. After the launch, at least one token named Myanmar nearly immediately garnered 95% of the attention.

This account posed as the State Administration Council and published several now-deleted posts promoting the coin for hours. Despite warnings from the community, the account continued with its “launch,” stating:
“Today, we are launching $birmas, an experiment aimed at demonstrating how simple things like memes can unite people, support national development, and place the Republic of Myanmar on the world stage.”
Strangely, the post was deleted in less than 10 minutes after its rise.
Scammers have been promoting fraudulent tokens by taking over high-profile political accounts. Just two weeks ago, hackers compromised the X account of Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and used it to promote a fake Malaysian token. The project ultimately resulted in a $1.7 million cash grab, leaving investors empty-handed.
In late January, the official X account of the Cuban government was also hacked. A fake “Cuban official coin” was launched, which turned out to be a fraudulent cash grab.
This is an evolving story.
