Coin World reported:
Peter Todd stated that he did not realize that HBO’s documentary was attempting to uncover the identity of the creator of Bitcoin, but rather was an in-depth exploration of the history of cryptocurrency.
The documentary director, Karen Hoback, claimed that Todd exaggerated when he said his life was in danger after being named as Satoshi Nakamoto.
Bitcoin core developer Peter Todd went into hiding due to concerns for his safety, following the release of an HBO documentary that named him as the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.
Aired earlier this month, “The Money Electric: Bitcoin and the Mystery” directed by Karen Hoback, explores the early days of Bitcoin and some key figures, one of whom is Todd. Another key figure is Adam Back, founder of Blockstream.
In the conclusion of the documentary, when questioned by Hoback, Todd says, “Yes, I am Satoshi Nakamoto.”
Prior to the release of the documentary, Todd denied being Satoshi Nakamoto.
After the release of the documentary, Todd began posting on social media, once again denying that he is Satoshi Nakamoto.
Someone called him out, writing, “I am not Satoshi Nakamoto.”
No one should help find Satoshi Nakamoto.
In an interview with Wired, Todd stated that he went into hiding after the airing of the documentary due to concerns for his safety.
Harassment faced by Todd included receiving 25 emails in two days asking him for help with repaying loans.
In an email to the publication, Todd said, “Clearly, claiming that regular folks with regular fortunes are extremely wealthy puts them at risk of robbery and kidnapping.”
According to Todd, he did not realize that the documentary was attempting to uncover the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, but rather was documenting the history of cryptocurrency.
Todd added, “This question is not only foolish but dangerous. Satoshi Nakamoto clearly did not want to be found, and there are good reasons for that. No one should help those trying to find Satoshi Nakamoto.”
In Hoback’s view, Todd exaggerated the situation, and nothing terrible happened to other individuals believed to be Satoshi Nakamoto.
According to Hoback, revealing the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto is a matter of public interest and is “extremely important” because this person “could become the richest person on Earth.”
Hoback believed Todd to be the creator of Bitcoin because he responded to a post by Satoshi Nakamoto in a 2010 online forum. According to Hoback, Todd’s post was a continuation of the original post by Satoshi, which was mistakenly sent from Todd’s account instead of Satoshi’s.
