Last night, news broke that Sentient has secured $85 million in seed funding, led by three top-tier VCs. Amidst the current market conditions, such a substantial investment piqued curiosity about the project’s background.
Here are the key findings:
First surprise, Founders Fund leads the investment.
Speaking of this VC, its founder Peter Thiel is certainly a prominent figure.
Peter co-founded PayPal and served as its CEO. He was also an early investor in Facebook and held a board seat for many years. Thiel has founded several investment firms including Founders Fund and Palantir Technologies, and authored the bestseller “Zero to One.”
As of early 2024, Founders Fund manages assets exceeding $11 billion.
AI again? Strength lies in the team!
So, what does Sentient actually do to attract such heavyweights?
Sentient’s platform will be built on Polygon, extending Ethereum’s capabilities in the AI domain.
Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, is a key contributor to Sentient.
A re-entry by former co-founders is always more trustworthy.
The project aims to address the concentration of AI underlying code among a few tech giants like Google or Meta. The open-source code is publicly accessible, allowing anyone to use it. Sentient plans to enter its testing phase this quarter, utilizing the seed funding to develop its platform and attract talent from AI research and blockchain engineering fields.
Sentient Team Composition:
Key members include: Sandeep, former co-founder of Polygon, Princeton University professor @viswanathpramod, lecturer at web3 https://web3.princeton.edu, @hstyagi, and @0xSensys.
What does OPEN AGI mean?
First, what is AGI:
Artificial General Intelligence refers to intelligent systems capable of understanding, learning, and applying knowledge to perform various tasks. These systems possess cognitive abilities similar to humans, capable of reasoning and problem-solving across multiple domains.
AGI is one of the ultimate goals in AI research.
While current AI systems excel in specific tasks, achieving true AGI remains a distant goal.
Existing AGI is unevenly distributed, with large countries and corporations possessing significantly higher levels of AGI than others.
Establishing OPEN AGI aims to ensure that AGI technologies serve not just a few wealthy countries and companies, but benefit individuals and institutions globally, especially those in resource-constrained regions. This can reduce the digital divide and promote balanced global technological progress.
