According to Coin World, the Taliban has officially applied to participate in the BRICS summit scheduled to be held in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24. Given that they are still designated as a terrorist organization in the country, this decision is rather odd.
The request comes from the Taliban’s acting Minister of Commerce, Nuriddin Azizi, who hopes that the organization’s top leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar, will represent Afghanistan at the summit. The organization has actually participated in various economic forums in Russia for three consecutive years, including the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, despite proposals from the Russian Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Justice in June to remove them from the list.
In the application submitted to Yuri Ushakov, an assistant to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azizi expressed the desire to send a high-level delegation that includes Baradar. Over the years, BRICS has developed into a highly influential geopolitical group. South Africa joined in 2010, and recently, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates joined on January 1 of this year.
More than 20 national leaders are expected to attend the Kazan summit, which will focus on strengthening economic cooperation and global geopolitical tensions
